The Eastern Shore Art League announces that it will be awarding the 2023 Becky Rootes Memorial Art Scholarships, in honor of Becky Rootes, past President of the ESAL. The scholarship will be awarded to two graduating high school students residing on the Eastern Shore of Virginia who are continuing to an advanced education institution (community college, college, or university) and who are planning to pursue a field of study inclusive of the visual arts.

How to Apply

Applications must be complete and postmarked on or before April 17, 2023.

  1. You may enter in one category 2-D or 3-D.

  2. Print and mail the application with required items.

  3. Deliver five pieces of your art on Saturday, April 29th at 10am to:

      6 College Ave, Onancock, VA 23417
      Room 104

  4. Pick up your artwork at Saturday, April 29th at 4pm. We will not be responsible for work not picked up unless prior arrangements have been made.

Application Requirements

Please print out the application (pdf file), complete it, and mail it to ESAL with the following items:

  1. Copy of letter of acceptance from the advanced education institution.

  2. Copy of your letter of intent to attend the above institution.

  3. An indication that your field of study will include the visual arts. This may be a copy of the curriculum you intend to pursue.

  4. A typed essay titled Artistic Goals, that outlines your artistic goals, not to exceed 100 words. For example, what do you plan to study in reference to art and future career goals that may include art.

  5. Two letters of reference from people who know your artwork and can recommend your abilities as a student artist:

    • one from a tutor or educator and one personal reference from someone who knows you well (not a family member) such as an adult neighbor, coach, or minister.

  6. Choose three of the five art works you will deliver Saturday, April 29th at 10am.

  • Type a one to two paragraph essay on each of these three.

  • Number your essays and identify your art works with the same number.

  • Describe your technique and motivation for creating each work. Topics might include, why do I create, why was I moved to create this, what does this creation mean to me, what is the medium, why did I select this creation to write about, what do I hope this creation means to others, what of my skills does this creation exemplify.

The Eastern Shore Art League is not obligated to award a scholarship if no qualified applications are received.
